Giovanni Patritti arrived in Australia in the early 1920's from the italian region of Piedmont. He founded his wine busniss in 1926 at Dover gardens near Adelaide, the capital of South Australia. The family began establishing vineyards in the McLaren vale region during the 1960's when suburban sprawl from Adelaide began to threaten the family's estate vineyards adjacent to the winery. The business continues today under the leadership of his three sons, daughter, and just recently, his grandson.

Under the direction of Geoff Patritti, a trained engineer, the winery has undergone extensive updating in recent years with the installation of a new Bucher press, new fermentation facilities, new tanks, and a sophisticated refrigeration system for white and sparkling wine production.

While the focus at Patritti is on premium table wines and sparkling wines, the family still makes a range of excellent fortified wines, as well as de-alcoholized wines and fruit juices.
